This morning, Khenpo Karma Gyurme (aka Tokpa Tulku) of Ka-nying Shedrub Ling was at long last able to travel by helicopter to his hometown of Prok in Nubri. Not only did he travel there to deliver 600kg of much-needed supplies from the Foundation, but he also went in search of his mother who lives there and whom he had not seen in several months. Watch the video clip for his personal account.
The supplies he delivered included 200 tarps, 300 packs of oil (oil is very important part of their diet and difficult to obtain in Nubri), and sacks of daal (as a source of protein, also unobtainable in Nubri). He reported that although no one was hurt during the earthquake, because all of their buildings were destroyed their greatest concern now is when and how to start rebuilding.
This photo taken from the helicopter gives you an idea of just how isolated this area is. Usually a 4-5 day walk, because of landslides that have blocked the trails it is now reachable only by helicopter, which is extremely expensive. Although in many respects, the Nubri people are presently in a better situation than many people in other places, the remoteness of the area is a cause of real concern for the coming months.
A more detailed account of his trip coming soon.
